1 cotton yarn count
Abbreviation: c.c. -
2 Count
The number of yarns is termed the "count." The cotton system is based on 840 yards to the hank, and the number of hanks that weigh 1-lb. (7,000 grains) equals the count, thus 10's cotton = 10 X 840 yards per lb. There are numerous systems in use for the numbering or counting of yarns as given under " Yarn count." -
3 Silk Yarn Counts
See Denier. Spun silk counts are based on the 840 yards hank, as in cotton, but in folded yarns the finished count is used, not the single count, with the number of component threads placed after the actual count resulting from the doubling. Thus 40/2 has 40 hanks of 840 yards in i-lb. and is composed of two threads of 80's single. Dram System - The weight of 1,000 yards in drams gives the counts, thus if 1,000 yards weighs 6 drams it is known as " 6-dram silk." This is known as the Manchester method of thrown silk counting. Another system is the number of yards per ounce, thus 25,000 organzine or tram yarn means 25,000 yards per ounce, and is that used in Yorkshire. The expression 12/14 as applied to silk yarn counts means that the yarn is not lighter than 12 denier, nor heavier than 14 denier, the average being 13 -
4 Linen Yarn Counts (Fine Or Wet Spun)
The basis for counting linen yarns is fixed by Act of Parliament. The reel is 90-in. in circumference. The count is the number of leas of 300 yards that weigh 1-lb. Linen yarns are sold by the bundle of 200 leas, and a number of bundles, varying with the weight, are made into a "bunch". Thus 14's is made into 11/2-bundle bunches, 24's into 3-bundle bunches, 30's into 6-bundle bunches, and so on. The Dorset and Somerset system takes the weight of 21,600 yards (called " dozen " or 12 half-hanks of 1,800 yards each). In France the pacquet contains 260,000 yards. In Belgium the pacquet contains 180,000 yards. Metric system - The counts indicate the number of kilometres (1,000 metres) of yarn in one kilogram (2.2-lb.)
